The Sacred Lineage of Kriya Yoga

Guruparampare

Introduction

Throughout the ages, certain sacred lineages have preserved not just techniques, but the living essence of spiritual awakening. The Kriya Yoga tradition represents an unbroken river of divine wisdom, originating from the primordial source of Adi Guru Shiva, flowing through enlightened sages and masters across millennia, and continuing vibrantly today through contemporary custodians like Pujya Sri Dr. Gurumurthy Guruji.

This golden thread of transmission connects the Himalayan caves where Shiva first revealed the science of Yoga to humanity, the forests of South India where Agastya established the Siddha tradition, the secret ashrams where Babaji preserved the practices through centuries, and finally to modern practitioners around the world through Paramahansa Yogananda’s pioneering efforts.

⚜ The Lineage Chain ⚜

Eternal
Adi Guru Ishwara (Shiva)

🌿 Eternal principle regarded as Sanatana, beyond time.
📜 In yogic lore, He is said to have imparted yoga to the Saptarishis thousands of years ago (some Puranic texts place this more than 7000 years ago).

Shiva is not only worshipped as a deity but revered as the Adi Yogi, the first Guru.
It was He who unveiled the science of Yoga, initiating Sage Agastya with the command: “Take this divine wisdom to the South, and let humanity be uplifted.”

Vedic age (5000–3000 BCE)
Sage Agastya

🌿 One of the Saptarishis.
📜 Traditionally dated around 5000–3000 BCE (Vedic period).
Regarded as the one who brought Shiva’s yoga and Siddha knowledge to the south of India.

Agastya, a seer of the Rigveda, became the fountainhead of the Tamil Siddha tradition.
He taught Yoga, Ayurveda, alchemy, and the subtle sciences of inner transformation, laying the foundations for generations of Siddhas who would preserve and expand this sacred knowledge.

c. 5th–6th century CE
Bogar Siddha

🌿 Tamil Siddhar, disciple of Agastya.
📜 Scholars roughly place him around the 5th–6th century CE, though Siddha tradition holds that through yogic mastery he lived far longer. His works like Bogar 7000 still exist.

Among Agastya’s foremost disciples was Bogar Siddha, master of Kriya Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Tantra, and alchemy.
He consecrated the mystical idol of Lord Murugan at Palani Hill, crafted from Navaratna (nine sacred elements). Bogar embodied the perfect union of yogic mastery and Siddha science, ensuring the flame of this tradition remained bright.

Ever-living, reappeared in 19th century (c. 1861)
Maha Avatar Babaji

🌿 The immortal yogi.
📜 No fixed historical birth date. In Kriya Yoga tradition, he became visible again in the 19th century (around 1861, when he initiated Lahiri Mahasaya). He is described as eternally young and deathless.

The most mysterious figure of this lineage is Maha Avatar Babaji, the deathless Himalayan yogi.
Transcending the limits of time, Babaji appeared in 1861 to initiate Lahiri Mahasaya, reviving Kriya Yoga for humanity. He is remembered as the Guru of Gurus, whose silent grace continues to guide seekers worldwide.

(1828–1895)
Lahiri Mahasaya

🌿 Householder yogi of Varanasi who spread Kriya Yoga in modern times.

Babaji’s grace shone through Lahiri Mahasaya, a humble householder who received Kriya initiation in the Himalayas.
He proved that spiritual realization was not confined to renunciates but open to every sincere seeker. His quiet revolution of spirit transformed thousands, spreading Kriya Yoga across India without building an organization.

(1855–1936)
Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri

🌿 Disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya, teacher of Yogananda, author of Kaivalya Darshan (The Holy Science).

Lahiri Mahasaya’s disciple Sri Yukteswar combined yogic discipline with deep wisdom.
He wrote Kaivalya Darshanam (The Holy Science), uniting East and West in spiritual understanding. With strict love, he prepared his disciple Paramahansa Yogananda to bring Kriya Yoga to the modern world.

(1996-Present)
Dr. Pujya Sri Gurumurthy Guruji

🌿 In 1996, with the divine grace of Mahavatar Babaji, he received Prayog Diksha (Practical Initiation). From that sacred moment, he dedicated his life to the living tradition of Kriya Yoga.

🌿 Since then, Guruji has been guiding seekers with simplicity and depth, helping them experience inner peace, spiritual awakening, and the joy of self-realization.

🌿 Through his teachings, thousands have been introduced to Sanjeevani Kriya, a step-by-step path that connects breath, awareness, and devotion, making the ancient science of Kriya accessible to all.

🌿 Today, he continues to serve as a compassionate guide, carrying forward the light of Babaji’s lineage for spiritual aspirants across the world.
